SWORDFISH

Our sword fishing gear includes two Lindgred Pitman LP SV1200 Electric reels- spooled with 80lb Diamond braid, 250lb Team Unleashed bouy whips for the bouy rod, and Team Unleashed wind-on leaders on both.

We daytime deep drop at depths of 1600 to 2200ft. Using a single bait on 400lb test leader. Our favorite swordfish baits are strip baits (the bellies cut out of other fish) stitched back together with a 12/0 Mustad hook. Other common baits are whole squid, eels, or artificial baits. We often put a squid skirt on over these baits and 2 small diamond lights are attached to help attract fish towards the bait.

A sacrificial weight is placed on the bottom hook by the bait with a peg as a release clip.  The second

weight is 75 feet above and is permanently clipped to keep the bait down.

We often set 1 rod on a bouy “bouy, jug rod’ and slack it away from the boat. Then fish a second “tip” rod straight up and down using the same method as deployment.
